Welcome to Boy Scout Troop 296 based in Celina, TX. This contains useful information that we want to
pass along to help you get the most from your Scouting experience and tell you a little bit about our troop.
The Boys Scouts are a uniformed organization and we require a uniform for most activities that the
troop participates in. The usual or Class “A” uniform consists of the tan Scout shirt with proper insignia and the
orange neckerchief and slide with jeans or green pants highly encouraged. (Class A Shirt) During the summer and on
campouts we usually go to a more relaxed Class “B” uniform consisting of our orange troop Scout shirt and
shorts. Hiking boots may also be needed, especially for campouts.
The Boy Scout Handbook is essential to your son’s growth and advancement on his Scouting
journey. It should be the first thing you purchase (available at the Scout Shop in Fairview) and always brought
to all meetings and activities.
The troop meets regularly on Sunday afternoons from 2-3:30 at First United Methodist Church of Celina
year round, with the exception of some Sundays on holiday weekends.
As with any organization, we need funds to allow us to function and purchase items
needed for our program. We collect $100 dues twice a year (July and December) that helps us pay for
registration fees, advancement items and much more. We offer fundraisers throughout the year for Scouts to
earn money in their scout account to help pay their dues, camp fees and equipment. Our biggest fundraiser is
our partnership with the Rotary Club to put out flags over several holidays throughout the year.
The troop schedules outdoor activities every month throughout the year. These are
usually weekend camping trips with a week long camp in the summer. The cost of camping trips is around $30
and summer camp usually costs around $400. Attendance at camping trips is essential to the growth and rank
advancement of your Scout. Parents are always welcome, but they must become registered adult volunteers
to attend camping trips. The troop provides tents and most of the gear, but your son will need his own sleeping
bag, mat or cot, mess kit and personal items.
One thing that is essential to advancement is regular attendance at Scout
meetings and activities. As your son advances, he will be recognized for his achievements at a troop meeting
and at a Court of Honor. The troop holds a Court of Honor 3 times per year to bring all of the parents and
relatives together to publicly recognize the achievements of your Scout.
All parents are invited to attend our monthly committee meetings. We encourage everyone to get involved and help.
Troop 296 hopes to welcome you and your son to our Scouting family! If you have any questions, please don’t
hesitate to reach out to one of us.
